CHALLENGE
BuurtKadoos was growing, but a high customer acquisition cost (CAC) was slowing them down. They needed a partner to help them scale efficiently, to lower the CAC from €600 to €300 and to attract new customers predictably.
RESULTS
We helped BuurtKadoos consistently generate or exceed the monthly goal of 60 SQLs while keeping CAC low, enabling them to realize their goal of empowering retail entrepreneurs in the Netherlands.

Imagine you’re a retail business owner wanting to attract new consumers in your neighborhood. With BuurtKadoos, you can reach a unique target group full of potential new regular customers. Namely, the recently relocated consumer.
When new residents move into a neighborhood, they’re actively looking for their new favorite shops and businesses. BuurtKadoos is a welcome package for those residents containing valuable gifts and offers from local businesses. The idea is to help local shops make a warm first impression and build lasting relationships with new residents in the neighborhood.
BuurtKadoos knew how to help local businesses grow, but scaling their own marketing was a different challenge. Growth was happening - but it came with rising customer acquisition costs. That’s when they turned to SUM Digital for help.
The goal? To scale predictably while bringing the CAC down from €600 to €300, to generate at least 60 sales qualified leads per month and to expand into more neighborhoods, securing visibility for more retail entrepreneurs in the Netherlands.
The first phase of our collaboration focused on implementing funnels and creating touchpoints to truly bring BuurtKadoos’ mission to life: helping retail entrepreneurs succeed in their local marketing efforts. To do this, we created valuable content like blogs with an SEO purpose and valuable guides offering actionable advice to help entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
At the same time, we expanded conversion touchpoints with the “Warm Welcome” offer, a two-month free benefit combined with a BuurtKadoos brochure, tapping into the psychology of reciprocity by surprising customers with early value before asking for commitment. These efforts increased both leads and clients. However, while the volume of leads grew, the customer acquisition cost (CAC) still remained higher than the goal.
Next, we looked at aligning the BuurtKadoos brand with its essence: being a gift (“kadoo”) that spreads positivity and excitement in the neighborhoods. The rebranding reflected the brand’s friendly, approachable personality, making it more appealing to local entrepreneurs and residents.
Then, we implemented HubSpot with a clear goal: to accurately track the CAC and ROI of leads that actually converted into customers. Until now, BuurtKadoos lacked the attribution insights needed to understand which campaigns were most effective. With HubSpot in place, we gained the visibility needed to optimize and break through the €500 CAC barrier, setting the stage for the next growth phase.
With no long-term nurturing in place, our next priority was to secure ongoing communication to BuurtKadoos’ leads and churned customers. Sending out educational emails spanning across months and sharing insights and success stories proved successful, allowing us to test different CTAs and offers.
Using our Customer Insights Report, we refined BuurtKadoos’ messaging and positioning around real customer behavior. We also ran sets of rotating, targeted ads for different entrepreneur segments, generating SQLs consistently.
The conversion rates went up. But some leads were still unresponsive via email, so we decided to introduce WhatsApp marketing to reactivate dormant contacts. This turned out to be an effective way to reach the retail entrepreneur - although heavily dependent on manual action.
That’s why our next challenge was automating emails and WhatsApp messages through HubSpot, being able to track all interactions from a single source of truth. Streamlining communication allowed us to reach BuurtKadoos’ desired number of SQLs and closed deals on a consistent basis.
With their marketing fully set up and ads performing steadily, BuurtKadoos now knows what works and what doesn’t. Our focus for the future is on even more expansion, A/B testing and targeting additional entrepreneur segments to generate more high-quality leads, all while keeping CAC low.
By combining data-driven insights with a personalized approach, BuurtKadoos is positioned to grow, reach more neighborhoods and help even more local Dutch businesses succeed.
By the end of this playbook, you’ll have a clear plan to grow your business by attracting new clients and turning them into loyal fans. It’s a long-term strategy that builds lasting momentum.
